A big part of travel is that it can make you smarter, expand your worldview, and open your mind to new ideas. One sure way to do this is by visiting a museum, and luckily for us, there are many to choose from around the world. The museum industry has rebounded strongly from the pandemic, and there are many new choices around the world.
As part of their “Top 10” campaign, USA Today asked its readers to vote for their favorite museums across America. From over 35,000 museums in the US, the finalists narrowed it down to 20 contenders in 8 categories, and readers voted for their favorites.
Here are the top museums across America, as voted by USA TODAY readers.
The best art museum
Winner: Detroit Institute of Arts – Detroit, Michigan
America’s Motor City has been undergoing a renaissance lately and is becoming a must-visit city for those interested in culture and history. With more than 100 galleries, the Detroit Institute of Arts has one of the nation’s largest art collections.
With pieces from the Americas, Europe, Africa, Asia and other cultures, this museum is not to be missed. It doesn’t hurt that all the art is on display in the architecture, a symbol of pride among Detroit residents.

Best history museum
Winner: National Subway Freedom Center – Cincinnati, Ohio
Committed to documenting the history of the Underground Railroad and its importance in American history, this eye-opening museum is a must-visit. Through a combination of permanent and traveling exhibits, the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center helps visitors understand what life was like for those who lived in slavery and the journey they faced after their escape.
While the subject is sometimes difficult to confront, it is vital and crucial to understanding slavery and all of its long-term effects.

The best music museum
Winner: Johnny Cash Museum – Nashville, Tennessee
No wonder America’s ‘Music City’ has a museum dedicated to one of its most famous musicians, a black man himself, Mr. Johnny Cash. Fans of Cash can visit his namesake museum and learn about his life and legacy.
Included in the exhibit are Cash’s musical career, his marriage to June Carter, and his time in the Air Force. Music fans can also visit the Country Music Hall of Fame while in Nashville.

The best science museum
Winner: Center for Science and Industry (COSI) – Columbus, Ohio
This nationally acclaimed science center has been educating and entertaining visitors for nearly 60 years. As grown in love as COSI, this interactive and engaging facility is a must-visit if you find yourself in or around Columbus, Ohio.
Also, don’t miss the COSI Planetarium and the amazing National Geographic Giant Screen Theater.

The best pop culture museum
Winner: Comic-Con Museum – San Diego, California
Once a summer favorite for fans of all things comic, the Comic-Con festival is now available year-round. Tucked away in San Diego’s beautiful Balboa Park, the Comic Con Museum is enough to attract not only serious comic fans, but many visitors.
With three floors of exhibitions and collections, there’s plenty of cool memorabilia to keep you busy for an afternoon.

In addition to these five categories, readers voted for their favorite religious museums, with Ark Encounter, Williamstown, Kentucky’s life-size replica of Noah’s Ark taking the top prize.
The National Infantry Museum and Military Center in Columbus, Georgia was awarded another ‘Best Free Museums’ category. And the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis was selected as the winner of the ‘Best Children’s Museum’ category.
