Voorhees, Denmark Tech students started the school year together

DENMARK, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) – Denmark Technical College and Voorhees University began the 2022-2023 academic year in Operation Olive Branch, transferring 313 freshmen and students to the two campuses on Tuesday.

Operation Olive Branch is a joint initiative by the presidents of both institutions to enhance the college experience for new and transfer students.

A key element was the oath of integrity, inclusion, respect and family that students pledged during the day’s activities, which began with a march from Voorhees to Denmark Tech for the regular program and special session.

After the sessions at Denmark Tech, students headed to Voorhees Pecan Grove for a cookout and celebration that included food, games, an eating contest, music and fun.

“Denmark Technical College and Voorhees University are in a prime position for collaboration, and Operation Olive Branch is a great way to help our students understand cooperation and unity,” said Ronnie Hopkins, Ph.D., president and CEO of Voorhees University.

The CEO of Denmark Tech echoed this.

“The two campuses have a long history since the founding of the Danish Technical College. We share a border, but more importantly, as HBCUs in rural South Carolina, we have a responsibility to engage, educate and empower our students not only academically, but socially as well,” said Willie L. President and CEO of the Danish Technical College.
