As I always say, electric concepts of the future will lean heavily towards a lounge-like experience with Level 5 autonomy. Well, Volkswagen Group wants to jump on board with its new concept electric vehicle that blurs the lines between a sedan and a utility vehicle.
A set of wheels that you can work on the go with a super customizable interior for that impromptu board meeting or that presentation you missed last night just because you were stoned.

This is a Gen.Travel concept that has a very futuristic feel as soon as you step inside. If you’re feeling too lazy and the ambient lights change to encourage a restful sleep, the sofa’s seats turn into beds in a flash. The VW team likes to call it “overnight tuning” and it’s not just that. The EV seat can be reconfigured for a conference setup – four seats and a large table bang in the middle. Now the ambient lighting makes it perfect for finding one in the groove.
At other times, the general passenger seat configuration may be placed in other ways. There are tray tables extending from the dashboard for a quick lunch on the way to the Superbowl game. One configuration with the front seats allows for augmented reality, keeping kids and curious adults entertained on the way to grandma’s place.
The foam-like cabin has been designed in such a way that it provides maximum light and allows passengers to experience the outside world. Volkswagen chose to keep the side windows at waist level to maximize outward views. When sleep mode slides the seats below this level, I hope that the glass windows will be shaded to prevent anyone from getting into traffic stops.
VW opted for a dome-wing door configuration for ease of entry and exit. Outwardly it looks nothing like the current VW car – it’s very chunky and boxy – check out that front end and windshield area. An interesting feature, Gen.Travel is equipped with electric body control that pre-calculates the movement of the vehicle and makes the necessary adjustments to the suspension, making the ride as smooth as possible. The car can also be driven for extended range “platooning” or in convoy (autonomous mode).
As of yet, there are no details on the electric drive train specifications as this is not a production purpose vehicle. In their press release, VW clearly stated that “individual features can later be transferred to series vehicles.” Gen.Travel is currently on display at the Chantilly Arts & Elegance Festival near Paris.
