Perhaps the rising trend of Paris is partly due to the popularity of the Netflix series ‘Emily in Paris’, which depicts a less glamorous version of the ancient French capital.

But, whatever the reason, the City of Light surpassed all European hubs as the top destination among luxury travelers last year, according to international travel agency network Virtuoso.

Based on analysis from Intel’s data warehouse, transactions for travel to Paris exceeded $63.6 billion last year, making it the European city of choice for 2022. And, Virtuoso’s hotel analytics show the same trend continuing through 2023. Other perennially sought-after destinations on the continent such as London, Rome and Venice.

Globally, New York City was the most booked city overall in 2022 and is currently growing at 13 percent over last year. However, this year, Paris is 96 percent higher than in 2022. It was a remarkable year for tourism in its own right, attracting 44 percent more travel bookings than the previous high-water mark year, 2019.

It’s no surprise that Paris is currently the most expensive of the top three European destinations to visit. The city’s hotel prices are 30 percent higher than the Italian capital and 21 percent higher than the English capital.

The average daily hotel price for booking a vacation at Virtuoso hotels in Paris is now 33% higher than before the pandemic in 2019.

With Paris’ timeless charm as a center of culture, fashion, art and gastronomy, and the city’s reputation for romance, wealthy globetrotters are undeterred by rising travel costs.
