There is nothing stopping Virginia Tech students from rooting for their team.
This year, the NCAA hopes to make campus host sites as neutral as possible by punishing a host who plays traditional hype songs, such as Virginia Tech playing “Enter Sandman,” as it typically does during women’s basketball games at Cassel Coliseum. Virginia Tech started playing Metallica’s music in 2010.
While the NCAA is banning actual venues from playing cheerleading songs over their loudspeakers, there is nothing they can do as fans have taken matters into their own hands. During VT’s Friday night (March 17) game against Chattanooga, Hokies fans in the Coliseum began belting out the chorus to the 1991 classic a cappella, a special moment of unity.

It all paid off in a 58-33 win over Virginia Tech in Chattanooga.
