Aircraft carriers have been strictly instructed by Vietnamese authorities to avoid airspace off the coast of Taiwan because of military exercises in China. The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam announced that the Vietnam Air Traffic Management Corporation has given them a ‘Notice to Air Missions’ (NOTAM) from China. Notham clearly warns pilots that there will be “six temporary danger zones” near Taiwan for all flights prohibited.
Carriers across Vietnam have been hit hard by the ordeal, with ‘over 100 international flights’ disrupted due to China’s military exercises.
Vietnam’s flag carrier, Vietnam Airlines, has begun modifying its flight routes to avoid airspace near the Taiwan Strait from today. A change in flight routes can seriously disrupt an airline’s normally seamless flight journeys. The Times of India reported last Thursday that the company had issued a statement to passengers clarifying that flights would face minor disruptions.
“Starting August 4, to ensure operation and flight safety, Vietnam Airlines will adjust the flight routes between Vietnam and Northeast Asia Japan, Korea and Taiwan to avoid flying in some areas near the island of Taiwan.”
The company acknowledges that this change will result in longer wait times for passengers, and has therefore apologized in advance and encouraged customers to transfer plans before travelling.
The airline has made it clear that this change will last as long as Chinese military exercises are in place.
Other airlines such as Vietjet, Bamboo Airways, EVA Airways and China Airlines have also been affected by this and more airlines are expected to follow suit with Vietnam Airlines soon. There is no doubt that China’s military exercises will cause some damage to many airlines while they are in operation.
