Uvalde’s only state football championship team celebrated its 50th anniversary Friday night amid a somber backdrop.
In his home opener, with everyone in the nation on his side, Uvalde didn’t disappoint thanks to some last-minute theatrics.

Uvalde was the scene of a horrific school shooting last May: 19 students and two teachers were killed. The team’s solo championship on Friday was planned well before the shooting, and the city decided to stay on schedule.
Our own Kevin Sherrington visited Uvald last month to cover the story. He wrote in part:
Nothing can heal the lives of 21 people. No one dares to speak. Of course, no one sees the notices. Steve Stoy and half a dozen of his old high school friends still live in the town where they grew up. They worship at the same church, shop at the same grocery store, and eat at the same restaurant with the victims’ families.
Drive the same memories.
After the May 24 shooting at Rob Elementary School, the ’72 Coyotes were so overwhelmed by the grief and anger they felt, they weren’t even sure they’d meet again. They didn’t know it was right.
But on Friday night, the 2022 Coyotes celebrated their 1972 championship in style in their hometown.
