The United States Tour Operators Association (USTOA) wants you to meet “Sustainable Susie,” the star of its new comic book promoting responsible travel.
“By day, she’s Susan, a USTOA tour guide who provides travelers with tips and examples of destinations and travel companies that are practical and sustainable to ensure a tangible world for future generations,” the organization said.

“Meanwhile, her alter-ego Suzy fought against the villains determined to infect the planet.”
USTOA has been advocating for sustainable tourism and held its first Sustainability Accountability Summit with Norway last May in Bodo, Norway.
“Sustainable travel means being aware of the impact tourism has on the environment and the communities we visit, and our comic book goal is to break down barriers for travelers to realize that even small steps can make a big difference,” USTOA said. President and CEO Terry Dell.
“While the comic may seem unconventional, Susie’s Sustainable Journey conveys the core messages of responsible travel in a humorous way, a very convenient way to understand issues, issues and solutions.”
In a comic book that highlights the importance of preserving natural resources and cultural treasures, tourism guide Susan guides a handful of travelers committed to sustainable tourism in places like Korea, Tenerife, and Norway.
“The storyline cleverly uses classic comic book tropes — superheroes defeat villains — to make the case that sustainable travel is an option,” USTOA said.
“Awareness is key,” Dale said. “And that’s the goal behind Susanble Suzy, to make ‘sustainability’ approachable and accessible so that we can all make responsible travel decisions that respect the places and people we visit, leave a small footprint and, most importantly, do no harm.”
