UK and EU launch antitrust probes on Facebook

Regulators in Brussels and the UK have launched formal investigations into competition on Facebook, in a joint assault on the use of social media company customer data to dominate in core markets such as digital advertising.

In a statement on Friday, the UK Competition and Markets Authority said it was investigating whether Facebook could be “abusing a dominant position in social media or digital advertising markets by collecting and using advertising data “.

Separately, Brussels said it was opening a formal antitrust investigation to assess whether Facebook violated EU law “by using advertising data collected in particular from advertisers to compete with them in markets where Facebook is active, such as classified ads “.

EU research will also examine whether Facebook links its online classifieds service to its social network, in breach of EU competition rules.

Confirmation of the two investigations follows reports from the Financial Times that reveal they would focus on how the social media company uses customer data.
