In an effort to keep travelers and local residents safe, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) has issued hurricane warnings for Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. In the last few days, Tropical Storm Fiona has been upgraded to Category 1 which will affect both tourist hotspots next Saturday or Sunday.
Initially a tropical storm, with sustained winds of 74 mph and above, Fiona was upgraded to hurricane status. This storm has claimed several lives in the Caribbean and is expected to affect both tourist destinations and a few islands in the area.
As Fiona moves from the southeast, it is expected to cause major hazards in the southernmost states where it hits.
Experts say Fiona could drop up to 20 inches of rain in these US states, causing landslides, mudslides, flash floods and other natural disasters.
Residents and visitors should expect significant power outages during and after the storm hits. Many flights and cruises to Puerto Rico have been confirmed canceled, and residents are currently window-boarding for the natural disaster.
In the year This is not Puerto Rico’s first major hurricane, as many residents remember, as Maria hit the area in September 2010. The Category 5 hurricane completely devastated the entire northeastern Caribbean and was recorded as the worst natural disaster to hit the region. A record, it caused more than $91 billion in damage.
