Tui tells staff to spend only one day a month in the office on Covid’s work shift

Tui, the UK’s largest travel company, has told its workers that they will only have to be in the office one day a month at the latest sign of the fundamental change in work practices caused by the pandemic.

The company said Wednesday it would offer “total flexibility” to staff as it shifts to a permanent, flexible work approach. “Work is something we do, not where we go,” Tui said.

Next week, the UK government will withdraw the rules to ask workers to stay home when possible and replace them with a recommendation for a gradual return to work.

But many companies found during the pandemic that working from home or a hybrid agreement between home and office is best suited to staff and operations, leading to a permanent change in work practices by the millions in the UK. .

KPMG offers a “four-fortnight” hybrid work plan for its staff. Lloyds Banking Group is designing a strategy around domestic, hub or hybrid work as new “work style categories” that its employees can choose from.

Nationwide has closed three offices in Swindon under plans to allow its staff to choose where they work from home, offices or local branches.

Accenture surveyed more than 1,400 British financial service employees in banking, capital markets and insurance and found that two-thirds would prefer to work in the office just two days a week or less. Less than one in 10 would favor returning five days a week to the office.

Tui employs more than 10,000 people, although the new flexible approach will not apply to some employees such as pilots, cabin crew, engineering and maintenance or retail store workers. The company is proposing similar plans in all its European operations.

The move would also mean the company will review its real estate portfolio, although Tui said in the short term there were no change plans given the need for space for collaborations and meetings.

The Germany-based group has struggled during the Covid-19 crisis, incurring heavy losses after most tourist markets closed for much of the past 18 months.

Most Tui office employees in the UK have been working from home since the start of the pandemic in March last year.

Andrew Flintham, managing director of Tui UK, said the “pandemic has allowed us as an organization to step back and make the necessary changes in the way we work, communicate and collaborate”.
