‘Travels with Darley’: PBS travel show visits New Mexico, where she started her hosting career

Darley Newman is a dreamer.

The travel enthusiast and host In 2006, she began her career in the TV series “Equitrekking” about her living and working in New Mexico, which premiered on PBS.

“New Mexico will always hold a special place in my heart,” Newman said. “That’s why I always go back there.”

Today, Newman is the host of the nationally televised “Journeys with Darley.” The series is celebrating its 10th season as Newman brings the world to viewers.

“It’s crazy to know we’ve come this far,” she says. Through my travels, I have been able to see the world and learn a lot while giving viewers a glimpse of the world.

In season 10, Newman traveled to Istanbul; Quebec; Wilmington, Delaware; Bordeaux, France; and Santa Fe.

In Santa Fe, Newman visits the Ghost Ranch in Abiquiu to walk in the footsteps of Georgia O’Keeffe, a cowboy who grew up alongside an artist and pioneer. She sits down with Santa Fe resident George R. Martin, creator of “Game of Thrones” and “Dragon’s Home,” about his entrepreneurial adventure in creating the Sky Rail Road to bring the old Santa Fe Railroad back to life. She takes passengers on a train ride to Old West Lammy Town to share an immersive adventure that takes them back in time.

Santa Fe episodes air Saturday, January 28 and February 4, on New Mexico PBS, Channel 5.1 at 10 am. The episodes will also be streamed on the PBS Video app.

Newman enjoyed sitting down with Martin and talking railroads.

“I’ve done a lot of episodes on trains, but this one is different,” Newman said. You think of street art on trains and these are beautiful. Then you combine local food, drinks and live entertainment.

If Martin and local film producer and entrepreneur Bill Banowski and Kathryn Oppenheimer thought it was a great idea to restore the Santa Fe Southern Railroad, which has been closed since 2015, the train was born in 2020. The line runs from Santa Fe to Lamy.

It opened in December 2021.

“The ride is steeped in history,” Newman said. “You can’t get any better than that.”

During the course of the show, Newman noticed that the conversations were more interesting.

“I was I have traveled for over 10 years and met so many people around the world,” she says. “It’s hard to spend time with people in today’s world. I was able to find those backstories in the series.”

Newman spoke with David Manzanares, who worked at Ghost Ranch and knew O’Keefe well.

She also highlighted the work of Santa Fe-based artist Patricia Marin Miranda of Marin Laba Fine Art on Canyon Road.

Marin was born in Costa Rica and moved to the United States with her five children.

She moved to Santa Fe in 2019 and signed a lease for her gallery in January 2020.

Her art technique includes real wild bird feathers.

“There are no rules in art,” says Marin. “When people make laws, they destroy art.”

Santa Fe classes include Newman’s time at the 2022 International Folk Art Market.

“We really planned the shoot around the market,” Newman said. “You have people from all over the world. Idea viewers want to see it.
