Yes, we have nice beaches and beaches in the South Bay, but it doesn’t look like this, as I pointed out in a recent Photowalks TV episode. How many winners can you name in Hermosa and Redondo?
Mendo, as the locals say, is a former logging town that is now mostly developed by tourism. Visiting the city will mostly be on foot. Everything you need to see, in the village, you can easily reach on foot. You’ll drive out of town to see the Point Cabrillo Lighthouse, Russian Gulch State Park, and the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens.
Here’s a quick walking tour:
Start at the Ford House Visitor Center, a house originally built in 1854. The center is stocked with welcome maps and information, and also serves as the visitor center for Mendocino Headlands State Park, which is directly behind the building and all the curves. through the city. Spend a lot of time exploring the Headlands trails, which are amazing.
Turn left and enjoy the businesses on Main Street, including the historic Mendocino Inn, Dick’s Pub, and the quaint Bookwinkle Book Store.
Continue on Caston Street for two blocks and turn right on Little Lake Street and look for the large white two-story Victorian house where Jessica Fletcher lived in the murder, she wrote to you. And do what so many of the Instagram era do: get a selfie of yourself in front of the house.
Walk a block, back to Lansing Street, and check out the Big Harvest Market, the only place to buy groceries in the village, and other shops and cafes along the street include Patterson’s Pub, Good Life Cafe, and the Savings Bank. of Mendocino. Walk inside and you’ll see an old bank that still looks like it was in the early 1900s, with the money changers behind the tunnels. Then go outside and marvel at the statue on top of the building. Once you’ve explored the town, hop in the car and head north to Russian Gulch State Park and the Point Cabrillo Lighthouse. Russian Gulch is an eight-minute drive, and the main thing is to go to the waterfall. After that, continue down the path to the Lighthouse. On another exit, head to Fort Bragg for the Botanical Gardens and Glass Beach.
If you go, the drive from South Bay to Mendocino takes about ten hours. You can also rent a car and drive into the San Francisco Bay Area (SFO, Oakland, San Jose or Sacramento). It is also possible to fly to Santa Rosa, which is about an hour away.
