December travelers will see fewer flights arriving at Philadelphia International Airport.
Philadelphia Business Journal (subscription) American Airlines has reported that it will cut 15 percent of its flights in the first two weeks of the month due to pilot and other staff shortages.
Some of the cuts include fewer flights to popular destinations with multiple daily nonstops.
American Airlines said it was ahead of schedule as it recovers from the pandemic.
Fewer flights can send many Delaware business and leisure travelers to Baltimore-Washington, despite the long drive and tolls. Southwest Airlines operates what it calls a focus city. Southwest has also cut its schedule.
While American accounts for the lion’s share of flights out of PHL, Frontier Airlines has emerged as the No. 2 nonstop carrier to more than two dozen cities. Frontier flies twice a week non-stop to Orlando from New Castle Airport.
Frontier recently announced a daily flight from Philadelphia to Phoenix, a destination where American makes half a dozen daily nonstops.
Amtrak Group’s fares expand
Amtrak is offering sweet discounts for group travel through its Share Fare program. Discounts can be added for groups of up to eight traveling to a family event or business meeting.
To get the fare package, passengers must travel together on the same itinerary and book tickets together. Discounts are as follows.

Reservations for shared fares must be made at least two days prior to departure. Northeast Corridor trains that stop in Wilmington are eligible.
3-2-1 Tourism promotion returns
The “3-2-1 Trip” to Greater Wilmington and the Brandywine Valley is returning this fall. Available at participating hotels, the package includes free admission to three top attractions for two adults and two children (ages 17 and under).
Museums and gardens included in this year’s program are the Delaware Museum of Art. Delaware Museum of Nature and Science; and the Winterthur Museum, Gardens and Library. The attraction tickets are valid from September 15 to November 15.

“It’s been so popular with visitors that we decided to bring in new attractions this year,” said Jennifer Bos, executive director of the Greater Wilmington Convention and Visitors Bureau.
