Abolishing the traffic light system means travel will mostly return to pre-outbreak conditions from 11:59pm on Monday night.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern announced on Monday afternoon that her cabinet had decided to leave the system rather than fix the settings or move the country greener. Here’s how travel can hurt.

International travel
New Zealand reopens to unvaccinated visitors.
Under the orange setting of the traffic light system, New Zealand citizens and residents and Australian citizens living in New Zealand were allowed to enter the country without proof of full covid-19 vaccination, unless exempted.
From 11.59pm on Monday, no-one entering New Zealand, including flight attendants, will be required to provide proof of vaccination.
Access attempts are cancelled
People arriving in Aotearoa on day zero/one and day five/six are not required to take Rapid Antigen Tests (RATs). However, the government still encourages them to do so.
In New Zealand, people who have been diagnosed with Covid-19 are still required to self-isolate for seven days, but not their family members.
“They will only be asked to have a quick antigen test every day before their family relationships can go about their normal lives,” Ardern said.
The government will continue to provide travelers with ongoing PCR tests and genome sequencing of positive cases, which is considered an important part of monitoring for new variants.
“We will also use targeted surveillance at the border to check for new differences,” Ardern said.
All travelers to New Zealand are still required to complete a New Zealand travel declaration form
Before boarding your flight to Aotearoa.
Mask
Masks are not required anywhere except in healthcare facilities and aged care facilities.
This means you no longer have to wear a mask on domestic flights, public transport, Cook Strait ferries, Quirail services and taxis and ride-share services. You can also go without a mask in airports and transport terminals.
However, masks are still “encouraged” in restricted areas such as public transport and when visiting people who are particularly vulnerable to Covid-19.
Ardern asked Kiwis to “respect those who choose to wear masks as a form of protection”.
The prime minister said this winter would be the first in three years without Covid-related restrictions.
“This will be the first summer in three years when there is no question?” She said. Where events are not canceled due to covid issues. When our borders are completely open and there is no fear of alienation or suffocation. The first summer that we have certainty. And that said, I’m hoping the covid stress can start to heal.
