All corners of the auto industry are catching on as more buyers opt for electric vehicles. The latest news comes from major tire manufacturer Goodyear as the company reveals its plans to further support the EV market.

You may recognize the Goodyear name from its wide selection of tires for any vehicle, or from the large blue and yellow stripes you see on game day. In any case, Goodyear is one of the largest tire manufacturers in the world, with sales in every region.

A company that’s been in business for over 120 years — like Goodyear — knows a thing or two about staying ahead of trends. And that’s exactly what the tire maker is doing by expanding its options for electric vehicle owners.

Because EVs operate differently than gas-powered vehicles (that instant driving sensation), traditional tires aren’t ideal. In fact, the company claims that EVs can wear standard tires 30% faster.

Goodyear recognizes this and in 2018 introduced its first tires designed specifically for electric cars. The tire maker claims that special tread designs last longer, extend driving range and can support the weight of the battery.

Last year, Goodyear took a big step into the EV market, unveiling its Electric Drive GT EV tire—the first replacement tire from the American manufacturer to hit the North American market.

The EV tires were originally designed to fit Tesla vehicles, but the company is also handling new models. However, Goodyear’s latest electric vehicle tires are designed to fit a number of popular models (not just Tesla).

Goodyear introduced new tire options for EVs

Adding to its electric vehicle tire lineup, the company is releasing the Goodyear ElectricDrive all-season tires. On top of that, Goodyear is adding two new sizes for the Electric Drive GT.

Goodyear ElectricDrive can fit 44% more EVs in the US, so electric drivers will have more tire options. The new tire is available in 215/50R17 95V XL and 215/55R17 94V SL and comes with a 60,000 mile tread life limited warranty.

This means that the new all-season tires are suitable for those driving EV sedans or crossovers, such as:

Goodyear’s ElectricDrive all-season tires are specifically designed to support heavy front loads in EVs because of their batteries. EV tires handle both wet and dry conditions with an asymmetric tread design for superior grip.

Michael Kramer, Goodyear’s director of consumer product marketing, is excited about the new options for EV owners:

Goodyear focuses on providing innovative products and technologies for the EV segment and providing drivers with the quality, performance and improved tread wear they expect from our brands.

You can also get Electrdrive GT EV tires in the following sizes now.

  • 55/45R19 104 W XL
  • 235/45R18 98W XL,
  • 235/40R19 96W XL

The Goodyear ElectricDrive GT electric vehicle tires have a 40,000-mile limited warranty on tread life. EV drivers can find their Goodyear tire options on their website (www.goodyear.com) or by contacting their local dealer.

Electrek take

Goodyear is doing what you’d expect for a company that’s been in the auto industry for more than 120 years — adapting.

You can start to see the changes in the auto industry as companies from all corners of the world shift their businesses to support the EV revolution.

Goodyear is one of the most recognized tire companies in the industry, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the competition follows suit. With more EVs on the road, more tires are needed, and Goodyear is making sure it’s ready to handle whatever the auto industry needs as it shifts gears.
