Three All-ACC candidates for Georgia Tech

In two weeks, toe meets skin, and Georgia Tech’s 2022 season begins.

Fall camp is winding down and the team is gearing up for a game against Clemson. One of the highlights of fall camp was how the offense looked and the progress that seemed to be made in each quarterback.

Offensive coordinator Chip Long was praised by the players during the fall camp media session and that’s reason to be optimistic that things will turn around on the ball side. However, with so many new startups, some game makers are going to rise to the top.

The ACC has more than a handful of good players at multiple positions, and it would be difficult for any player from any school to make the All-ACC list. But who are the best candidates for Georgia Tech? I make my choices below.

3. Donta Smith

Georgia Tech's Donta Smith runs the ball

Georgia Tech’s Donta Smith is expected to be the leader in the running back division

The running game will be a big part of the new offense for the Yellow Jackets and the leading man will most likely be Donta Smith. I think Smith is talented and this running game has a chance to be strong even if they lose Jahmir Gibbs to Alabama.

The two things I think could hinder Smith from competing for a spot are 1) more guys can get more carries and 2) the offensive line is still a big question mark. Dylan McDuffie and Hassan Hall bring something to the running game and could be running backs in a committee approach.

I think Smith has the potential to be a superstar for Tech this season, but the odds prevent him from being higher on this list.

2. Dylan Leonard

Tight ends will be prominent plays in the offense this season and that means tight ends could have a big role in the receiving game. The one who could benefit the most is Dylan Leonard.

Tight ends haven’t played a big role in past offenses and that hasn’t allowed Leonard to show what he’s capable of. He could also be a target for quarterback Jeff Sims in the red zone.

Leonard has to block Luke Benson and Paige Harris, but he leads the tight ends in snaps and I think that will allow him to break out.

1. Jordan Williams

Georgia Tech is going to have questions to answer on the offensive line, but one thing you can count on is Jordan Williams leading the class. Williams has been playing since arriving at The Flat and is poised for his biggest season yet.

Geoff Collins said he thinks Williams is one of the best linebackers in the ACC and this could be the year he puts it all together and plays like it. He is the best candidate to make the All-ACC team this season.
