Thousands face Labor Day travel problems More than 100 flights were canceled and more delayed on the busiest travel weekend since the pandemic began.

Airlines and airports blamed staff shortages, bad weather, Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ground stops and today’s failed shuttle launch for the travel chaos.

Experts predict that as many Americans will travel by air and car this weekend as the pandemic began, the delays and cancellations will cause thousands of hardships.

AAA spokeswoman Ellen Edmonds told The Washington Post that reservations that include flights, cars, cruises, hotels and tours are up 22 percent over the 2021 Labor Day weekend.

Travel booking app Hopper predicted 12.8 million Americans would fly domestically from Thursday to Monday.

Since the easing of Covid restrictions, international travel has increased by 102%, with a total of 1.8 million travelers going abroad.

“It’s going to be even busier than last Labor Day weekend,” Tampa International Airport spokeswoman Emily Nipps told WFTS.

We’re certainly seeing some days, some peak days, higher than we saw before the pandemic.

Today, according to FlightAware, 105 flights within, in or out of the United States have been canceled.

A total of 1,622 US flights were delayed.

Commuters facing long delays and cancellations have shared their anger at having their holiday weekend ruined.

“It was very frustrating because we were delayed; the first plane was delayed, then we were trying to get back there on time, and the second plane was delayed,” Garvin Zephyrin told WFTS.

The US Department of Transportation recently created an airline customer service dashboard where passengers can search for benefits and accommodations if their flight is delayed or canceled.

“’Hey, it was our fault. We’re spoiled, it’s great,” Zephyrin said.

“Great. Here’s what we can do for you. Now, we know, and honestly, I feel more comfortable flying with that airline because I know I don’t have to fight with you to get what I deserve.”

It will be a very busy weekend for airlines across the country as nearly 340,000 passengers move through Tampa International Airport.

“On average, about 60,000 passengers a day are going to come through the airport,” Nipps said.

“Anything from hurricanes to wheel launches can delay flights because that fills up Florida’s airspace,” Nipps said.

However, travel experts say delays are unlikely to be as bad as they have been in recent months.

“The FAA, the airlines, everyone is doing their part to get us back to normal as quickly as possible, and we’re seeing great progress,” Nipps said.

ABC6 reports that Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) will see 481,000 travelers this weekend.

They spoke to a passenger at the airport who saw an increase in flight turbulence.

“I feel like there aren’t as many delays and canceled flights anymore,” said Shondra Borge.

PHL officials said the number of commuters will decrease on Sundays.

If you are traveling through PHL, try to drive as parking is limited in the on-site garages and economy lot.

Tampa International Airport is also struggling to accommodate travelers parking.

“We have some construction that will impact our short-term garage. So there will be a peak period where we’ll be moving people out of the short-term garage and then parking in the long-term garage,” Nipps said.
