This year travel is chaotic, there is no turning around. Every flight you book has the potential to go wrong, and every piece of luggage you check in can be lost. But of course, after two years of lockdowns and border closures, nothing is stopping us from exploring the world.
But should we fly hand-held when checking a bag is risky? The answer is probably yes, even outside of the post-pandemic recovery. It will save you time and trouble and actually help you in the long run by simplifying what you bring. But sometimes, it’s not possible to cut that much, and checked baggage is the only option.
Scenes from airports such as Heathrow and Schiphol where mountains of luggage are left near the carousel, some of which are not seen for days after the owner does. When bags are left sitting for a few days, they are often moved to warehouses or airport rooms for storage, making it very difficult to retrieve them if they fall out of the system.
Fortunately, technology is coming to the rescue of travelers when their bags don’t reach their destination. Apple Airtags and many other tracking devices have made the process even easier for customers to bypass the strategic red cap miles that often stand in their way. If the worst happens and something gets stolen, it’s providing good protection while traveling.
The tiny device uses Bluetooth to detect any iPhones within a certain radius — roughly eight hundred feet — and generates a GPS location based on those phones’ proximity. One of the most popular handheld devices on the planet, the iPhone, is never far away, and an AirTag owner can safely assume their item is close to a GPS pin.
Many reports have shown that Airtags have been helping passengers whose luggage seems to have disappeared into thin air. They also emphasize the relationship between the airline and the regulators.
A user flying from Canada to Dublin was told several times that his bag was in Dublin and would be with him soon. But a glance at the AirTag app found the luggage still in Montreal. It took several days for the bag to move, but he managed to find them once they arrived.
Another case in the UK saw a newly married couple return home from their honeymoon to find all three of their suitcases missing. Immediately she was able to see that the bags had not arrived on their second flight and were still in Frankfurt. She was able to inform the airport, she confirmed that they would pick up the next night. Only two were found.
Another check on the app revealed that the bag had been sent to the wrong address in London. The airport couldn’t do anything right away, so instead the couple called the police, who were able to retrieve the luggage from a point on the map.
Although many successfully found their bags, some scoffed at the authenticity of the tags. An American golf tourist discovers that his clubs were not with him and are still on the tarmac at Newark Airport.
The rest of his vacation saw the backpacker making odd trips back and forth from the north of Scotland to the English Midlands to the UK. He could still see where the bags were, but the airline was unable to resolve the issue. Although they can’t always solve the problem, they give some hope because the place is always available.
But what if you don’t have an iPhone? While AirTags may be the best option right now, thanks to the popularity of iPhones, there are options for other types of phones, and some that aren’t tied to any particular model.
For Samsung loyalists, SmartTag or SmartTag Plus is almost the same product. By connecting to nearby Samsung phones, it provides GPS location in a similar way to Airtags. Although these phones are rare in America, Huawei has its own version.
If you don’t want to be tied down to a phone manufacturer, or maybe you and some of your friends or partners have different items that you want to keep track of, Tile is one of the best in the game. They have been producing trackers for years and they keep getting better. From larger options that fit in your suitcase, they have slimmer options that slip through card slots in your wallet. They have a number of upgrade options including a great option and insurance.
Cube and Chipolo both offer similar products. The Cube has a more expensive GPS option, which gives more accurate readings than the other products combined, because it doesn’t rely on other phones to generate location. It has its own built-in GPS, meaning you’ll never lose track of your items.
No matter what options you go for, a tracker should be one of the things you buy before you travel this year.
