Valid passports are essential for every traveler, but having a valid passport is even better. Going through visa procedures and travel restrictions can be very frustrating and add stress to any travel plan.
But how powerful is your passport? Henley & Partners, an international agency focused on residency and citizenship, recently published its annual ranking of the world’s most powerful passports.
The company’s team of experts took into account data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and its own historical data – collected over the past 17 years – and the most recent traffic reports to obtain the most accurate data available today.
The index includes 199 different passports compared to 227 destinations around the world, with the most stringent visa requirements.
Important information for travelers, especially dual US citizens who have been waiting months to renew their passports. Here is a summary of the results:
10 most powerful passports in 2022
Travelers with passports on this list are very lucky and can travel to many destinations from most of the countries listed.
- Japan: World’s most powerful passport 193 can be obtained without a visa.
- Singapore and South Korea: He can visit 192 countries without a visa.
- Germany and Spain; It can reach 190 countries without a visa.
- Finland, Italy and Luxembourg: It can reach 189 countries without a visa.
- Austria, Denmark, Netherlands, Sweden 188 countries.
- France, Ireland, Portugal and England: 187 countries.
- Belgium, New Zealand, Norway, Switzerland and the United States: 186 countries.
- Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, Greece and Malta: 185 countries.
- Hungary: 183 countries.
- Lithuania, Poland and Slovakia: 182 countries.
Asian and European countries top the list of best passports to hold in 2022. Among the residents of the United States, other popular nationalities were observed internationally: Mexico ranked 24th with access to 159 countries, China ranked 80th with 69 countries, and India ranked 87th with 60 countries.
Compared to Japan, an American passport requires a visa to visit more countries. Destinations such as Bolivia, China, India, Iran, Japan, Turkey, and Venezuela require visas for Americans but not for Japanese citizens.
The worst passports 2022
Travelers of other nationalities with very poor international connections are not so lucky.
- Afghanistan: The last place is 112, and without a visa can only get 27 destinations.
- Iraq: It is ranked 111th and can visit 29 destinations without a visa.
- Syria: Level 110 and 30 destinations can be reached without a visa.
- Pakistan: Level 109 and 32 destinations can be reached without a visa.
- Yemen: Level 108 and 34 destinations can be reached without a visa.
- Somalia: Level 107 and 35 destinations can be reached without a visa.
- Nepal and the State of Palestine: Level 106 and 38 destinations can be reached without a visa.
- North Korea: Level 105 and 40 destinations can be reached without a visa.
- Libya, Kosovo and Bangladesh Level 104 and 41 destinations can be reached without a visa.
- Sudan: Level 110 and 30 destinations can be reached without a visa.
Arab countries and Middle Eastern countries have been identified as the most unsuitable countries for traveling around the world.

Another interesting aspect of the reporting platform is the interactive option called “Compare My Passport”, which allows travelers to compare up to four different passports, and also see in more detail which countries require or do not require a visa and what type of visa they require, if it is normal. Visa or Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA) only.
In order to publish the Henley Passport Index regarding the requirements, experts go through a research process and analyze data throughout the year to identify policy shifts.
They also used a scoring system based on visa requirements: destinations that do not require a visa or a visa on arrival or ETA – where no government authorization is required before travel – get 1 point and destinations that require a visa or an e-Visa get 0 points.
