Mexican officials recently announced three new attractions slated to open this year, giving travelers another reason to visit this beautiful state.
Mazatlan: Sea of Cortez Aquarium
Commonly referred to as the “Pearl of the Pacific,” the resort town of Mazatlán has recently become increasingly popular with both short-term and long-term travelers. This cruise port on the Pacific Ocean is known for its beautiful beaches and year-round sunny weather.
There is no shortage of things to do in Mazatlán, a popular pastime is an easy stroll along the 13 kilometer sea wall known as the Malecón. This sea wall/boardwalk is one of the longest in the world. After a morning walk along the beach, you can explore the beautifully preserved historic center starting at Plaza Machado.
Starting in March 2023, one more thing in Mazatlán is the discovery of the new Aquarium. Aquarium Mazatlán is designed to increase the city’s reputation for marine biology. Named the Sea of Cortez Aquarium, this will be Latin America’s largest and one of the 10 largest aquariums in the world. The venue pays tribute to both the nearby Sea of Cortez, as well as the world-famous Jacques Cousteau, both in its name and in its exhibitions. At the time of this writing, admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children.

Mexico City: Amphibium, Axolotl Museum
Another new Mexican attraction dedicated to animals recently opened in Mexico City. It’s no secret that Mexico’s capital city has a long list of museums worth visiting, and one more has been added to the list.
Called the Amphibium, this museum focuses on the beloved Mexican salamander, the axolotl. Located in the famous Chapultepec Park, this free museum consists of laboratories, wetlands, and a conservation center. The museum’s interactive nature aims to help increase public appreciation and awareness of these elusive animals.
Therefore, the conservation and protection of the axolotl can be better achieved with more public education on the declining species. In addition to displaying a variety of axolotls, the museum also has over 30 other amphibian species for the public to enjoy.
Yucatan Peninsula: Maya Railway
The long-awaited project is finally slated to open this year, giving tourists a new way to explore the famed Yucatan Peninsula. The Maya Train has been the talk of the town for years among those hoping to explore some of the region’s 200+ ancient Mayan ruins.
While development of the Maya train has been delayed and debated for years, it looks like the engines will finally be launched this year. The construction of the tracks for this project has resulted in many new discoveries. As more new Mayan ruins and historic sites are excavated, local indigenous and conservation groups are increasingly concerned about the preservation of these sites.
Construction controversies aside, the connectivity Maya Rail brings is undeniable. The Maya train runs on a circuit covering 1,500 km, crossing five states and stopping at 21 stations. Connecting Cancun, Tulum, Mérida, Playa del Carmen and other lesser-known cities, officials hope the Maya train will be used by both tourists and locals. It should also be noted that the train will be under security and police control to help solve the security problem of the passengers.
