Wisconsin Latino Chamber of Commerce 2022 Wisconsin Latino Business Excellence Awards Gala, titled HonorSaturday, August 13, 6-11 pm at the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center will be an opportunity to “Celebrate All Latinos in Wisconsin.”
“It’s going to be a wonderful celebration. We will lose our members and we will only lose the opportunity to highlight our businesses and all the resilience that has occurred post-Covid. And we have great stories to tell this year,” Wisconsin Latino Chamber of Commerce CEO Jessica Cavazos told Madison 365.
“The event is called Tributo – Tribute in Spanish – for business excellence, business owners and also the contribution of the Mexican diaspora living in the United States… This will be the focal point,” Cavazos continues. “So it’s going to be a fun holiday because we’ve had a break for three years without a big gala. [due to COVID]. For us, it’s one of the ways that we can generate unlimited funds for programming, which is very important, and it helps us support our small businesses in different ways.
The gala will also be an opportunity to present awards to a variety of individuals, groups, community partners and small businesses. The list of 2022 gala awardees includes:
- Youth of the Year: Alison Hernandez Araiza from El Gran Taco Gato
- Corporate Partner: Monona State Bank
- Community Partner: Greater Madison Chamber of Commerce
- Entrepreneur of the Year: Hector Rivera with Rivera Construction
- Entrepreneur of the Year: Katya Jimenez with Mount Horeb Hemp
- Incubator of the Year: Alice Good LLC
- Legacy Award: Community News LLC
- Agent of Change: Kim Garber with the Wisconsin Procurement Institute
- Gateway Award: Marjorie Racket,
- Ethnic and diverse business combinations
- Family Business of the Year: Los Amigos
The keynote speaker will be Claudia Franco Hijuelos, Ambassador-at-Large, Consulate of Mexico, Milwaukee.
“We’re excited to be hosting an amazing VIP reception so people can network and get people back into the gala atmosphere,” says Cavazos.
This is the 13th annual gala and 19th year for the organization, which was founded in 2003 to promote economic development and job creation through programs that bring success and value to the Latino and non-Latino business communities.
“We’re going to be 20 years old next year and we’re looking forward to that. I feel like 20 years is a big deal and we’re a mature organization in that time,” says Cavazos.
Part of that maturity will be a new building The Wisconsin Latino Chamber of Commerce is helping the organization expand its reach, hire more employees and support businesses that need it most in Latino communities around the state. Gov. Tony Evers awarded the Latino Chamber of Commerce $3.4 million in grants from the state’s separate business assistance program earlier this year.
“With the new building and the purchase of the property, everything with the chamber has been very busy,” says Cavazos. “Christmas was the busiest time of the year. Not only will we launch a capital campaign at the gala, we will also need to coordinate additional support.
This year, Cavazos added, small businesses have really come out to support the Latin Chamber.
“We usually have big corporate sponsors who invest in our classes and events, but this year it’s amazing how small businesses have supported us and this gala is not only about celebrating small businesses, but also funding and encouraging small businesses,” she said. “There are over 60 small businesses that sponsored our gala this year.”
Cavazos said she is expecting more than 700 people at the event. There are still a handful of tickets left.
“It’s a community-based event and it’s a lot of fun,” says Cavazos. “Many of Madison’s ‘Who’s Who’ will be there.” [Boys and Girls Club CEO] Michael Johnson, [U.S. senatorial candidate] Mandela Barnes and Mayor Satya [Rhodes-Conway] with local Latin leaders [Centro Hispano Executive Director] Karen Koller and [Latino Academy Directr] Baltazar de Anda Santana.
At the 2022 Wisconsin Latino Business Excellence Awards Gala, there A special performance by Mariachi Mexico International and Ballet Floclorico de María Díaz will perform during dinner. After the show, live entertainment will be provided by Grupo Zubia and DJ Chiklin.
“The annual gala is a night to celebrate all things Wisconsin Latin,” says Cavazos. “We are thrilled to be able to put on such an amazing event and to not only celebrate the success of Latino business, but also its growth and the fact that Latinos are the fastest growing demographic opening businesses nationally…and this is in Wisconsin. It’s not different.”
