Wellington, Fla. – The debate over the future of the Wellington Village-owned Executive Suite building has some small business owners worried.
“There is no other option,” said Dermot McMahon, a real estate and title attorney with an office in the Wellington Lake Professional Center. “If we get out of here, you have nowhere to go.”
A village workshop meeting on Dec. 12 looked at several options for phase three work at the community center, focusing on the competition pool and water park.
The office building was purchased by the village in 2013 as part of a “land bank” strategy to acquire property adjacent to the community center property.
Since then, the village has leased office space for an average rent of more than $800 per month, with approximately 66 businesses occupying small and large offices.
But new plans to redevelop the village’s community center are taking a hard look at the future of some office space, keeping the village under control.
“There’s nowhere to go. The only executive suites are off Lake Worth Road, but that’s not in Wellington,” McMahon said. “Half my customers are Wellingtonians. They love the convenience of coming here.”
“I’m sad about it,” said Stuart Hack, who rents three offices in the building.
No decision has been made and village council members are still weighing other options, scheduled to discuss more in January.
