The U.S. Department of Justice has said it will sue Georgia over its new law restricting access to the polls, in the first major legal action by the Biden administration against voting restrictions in republican-led states.
Attorney General Merrick Garland announced the move Friday and noted it could be a forerunner of action against other states that have adopted or are considering similar measures to limit the vote.
“Our complaint alleges that recent changes to Georgia’s electoral laws were enacted for the purpose of denying or restricting the right of Georgian blacks to vote for reason or color,” Garland said.
The case comes after the Biden administration and congressional Democrats suffered a setback in their efforts to advance legislation to protect voting rights nationwide. Republicans in the Senate blocked a bill this week that would have prevented states from enacting laws that would restrict voting.
Garland said any violation of existing federal voting laws, including the Voting Rights Act, 1965, would be questioned.
