The Thierry Mugler show brings leather, lace and darkness to Paris Fashion Week

It’s been over a year since French fashion designer Thierry Mugler passed away. He passed away on January 23, 2022 at the age of 73.

Just this week, industry insiders celebrated the one-year anniversary of supermodel Cindy Crawford posting a clip for Mugler’s 1991 runway show.

Now, for Haute-Couture Spring-Summer 2023 Fashion Week in Paris, Mugler Creative Director Casey Cadwallader has set the runway for the Mugler brand on January 26. Yes, it was full of theatrics—but in a different way.

Mugler’s classics are marked by technicolor flair — I mean, come on, look back at the well-deserved Brooklyn museum. Couturissime, Running until May 7 – the feathers and sequins are traded for leather and lace.

But this runway show saddened the designer with an all-black catwalk, lace veils, gowns and romantic touches of the macabre.

Not just what, but who. The star-studded runway is featured position Star Dominic Jackson in a lace bodysuit, with a matching veil, while supermodel legend Debra Shaw smiles on the balcony, wearing a turtleneck-like neckline (very Parisian), an asymmetrical blazer-esque dress with sheer fabric.

Other stars who took to the Mugler runway included late-night talk show host Zwei, as well as model Irina Shayk in an off-the-shoulder mini dress and Anouk Yai, who really stole the show with her dramatic flair.

Arca, the Venezuelan pop star, also walked the runway in a solo light. The dramatic lighting gave the scene an old school movie feel, even with a big screen showing the moment behind them. The front row was filled with stars like Lisa Rinna, Kylie Minogue and Charli XCX on the catwalk.

All in all, this Mugler collection is like boudoir biker chic, fulfilling the inner and outer self. The runway was definitely full of attitude, but it wasn’t without the gothic flair that The Addams Family was trying to get into Berghain. Poor power dresses were highlights, and so were scowls.
