BORN — “Critical maintenance” soon to be done on the Sagamore Bridge to Cape Cod could cause travel delays for weeks, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said Wednesday.
Lane closures will be in place from March 1 through May, weather permitting. Instead of two lanes in each direction, travel will be limited to one 12-foot lane in each direction during maintenance work. Lane restrictions will be in effect 24 hours a day until the work is completed.
“Motorists planning to use the Sagamore Bridge should be aware that travel delays may occur during the morning and afternoon peak travel times each day,” the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said in a statement.
The work includes concrete and sidewalk maintenance, repair of damaged steel supports and concrete plug structures, and maintenance of bridge joints.
Last month, the federal government Application rejected $1.88 billion to completely replace both the aging Bourne and Sagamore bridges. Bourne and Sagamore are described as “currently in a weak and fair condition, in danger of falling into a weak condition”.
