The CV-19 epidemic has led to another evolution in the ever-changing role of the corporate enterprise architect.
In recent years, Enterprise Architects (EA) have shifted from the role of technology control to responsibilities that are in line with business strategy. But for many, current trends have changed that, as corporations have increased their cloud services, emphasized their safety, and adopted a distant work culture during the outbreak, according to a recent study published by Forrest Research Inc. in Cambridge, Mass.
“Many companies have entered the survival mode,” said Gordon Barnett, chief analyst at Forster.
The role of a dynamic enterprise architect
According to a Forrest study titled “EA 2022 State”, the number of EAs set to influence business strategy and business projects between 2021 and 2022 has dropped from 15% to 7%. Business projects have declined from 28 percent to 14 percent. In addition, 67% of EA leaders have significantly increased their focus on technology strategy.
When times are hard and money is tight, companies are less talkative and talk more about their main line. The situation at Southwest Airlines was similar at the time of the outbreak, and customers canceled or canceled flights. Christian Holston, senior enterprise architect at Dallas Southwest Airlines, said the company had temporarily suspended its expansion plans.
“We rationalized rather than modernized,” Holston said.
The company knew that the trip would eventually return, so it took this time to better prepare the platforms for the outbreak. A silver cover? Business volumes have shrunk, so it’s not too dangerous to make dramatic IT changes that can be detrimental to the overall operation, Holston said.
It took time for the company to take a big look at architecture. “We saw not only the tree, but the whole forest,” he said. “It will help us to invest in the short term.”
He said the broad technology vision will give senior executives some insight into what is happening outside their own section and provide some insight into the risks in other parts of the company.

Not every industry has suffered as much as air travel. There has been a slight disruption in the business strategy of some companies, and the focus of the enterprise architect has remained intact.
Rudy-Dan Brandal, an Philadelphia-based Claudio-based medical equipment supplier for clinical trials, continues to play a key role in the integration of technology and business strategy. “Our focus has always been on technology,” said Claudio, chief executive of the company. The complexity of EA
Forrester puts Ian as four architects, and each of them values the organization, Barnett said. Some influence the business strategy, some focus on the technology strategy that facilitates the business strategy. Others are focused on a strategic portfolio, which ensures that the business invests in the right technology. The fourth type of EA is mainly focused on technology production.
Of Enterprise Architect Mina says she often receives support from senior management, but not always at the lowest levels, and according to Barnett, it can be challenging to build relationships. He said it is often surprising that the two areas that are the strongest contenders for EA are IT leadership and security. In fact, 61% of IT executives support EA, but during a downturn, EAs are often the go-to.

Clario Brandl agrees that without proper cooperation between teams, EA can fight for success. “Without an agreement, they are more likely to fail,” he said. Brandel said he enjoys good support from peers and senior management, and will certainly help him build relationships for many years as Clario’s vice president of engineering.
Brandal currently manages a team of up to six applications and technical architects. “Collaborating and delivering EA is our job,” he said. “Not just for security, but a complete set of layers.”
Special EA tool usage is low.
The most difficult challenge for EA is to keep it up-to-date with all the company’s stakeholders. There are tools that specialize in this function, especially in the market. But Forster reports that 53% of companies use Microsoft Suite for EA operations.

That figure is down 70% from last year, which Barnett estimates could be due to a significant EA strike during the epidemic. According to Barnett, about 30% of companies use the EA tool. “You don’t see the benefit or the price is too high,” he said.
But commercial equipment can provide a simpler interface and better reporting, according to South West Holston, which uses German-made software for Linux.
Clario, for his part, is an Australian company owned by Sparx Systems Pty Ltd. Uses built enterprise architecture modeling tools. For more than 12 years, Clario has built a large number of businesses and infrastructure.
