JTA – Dan Snyder, owner of the Washington football team, was unable to attend a sexual harassment scandal on July 6 and 8 because he went to Israel to observe his mother’s death, the rabbi said.
The House Regulatory and Reform Committee called on Snyder and NFL Commissioner Roger Goodle to be part of an investigation into the work ethic of commanders and to be part of Snyder’s response to many complaints.
In a letter to the Jewish Telegraph, Snyder’s lawyer Karen Patton Seymour said his wife was traveling to Israel but would be ready for video testimony on July 28 or 29. The committee, which requested a delay, presented July 6 and 8.
In a letter, Seymour said: “Mr. Snyder’s trip to Israel cannot be postponed because these plans are religious ceremonies to commemorate his mother’s birthday.”
Several female executives with the group accused their co-workers of sexual harassment. The document, released in June by New York Democrat Caroline Maloni, called for a “shadow inquiry” by Senate Committee Chair Snyder to dismiss the allegations, which include hiring private investigators to intimidate witnesses.
The NFL team fined the team $ 10 million and Snyder quit his daily activities after the investigation was announced last July.
In a letter to Maloni, Snyder Rabbi Sholom Richich wrote to Maloni that the Snyder family had planned to travel to Israel last year. Yahrzeit is often treated at home and occasionally in synagogue ceremonies, but Richich says this year’s celebration coincides with the completion of the Torah scroll ordered by Sennacherib’s mother, Arly Snyder.
James Comer, a Republican member of the Kentucky Committee of the Oversight Committee, also received the letter from the rabbi.
Richich wrote that he and Dan Snyder had planned a trip to Israel, “mostly in July and August.”
Richich also said that representatives of the Snyder family had informed Maloni on several occasions about the yahrzeit celebration and had offered several alternative witnessing days, “including those from outside Israel.”
“I understand that many of these Jewish customs may be unfamiliar to you and your staff,” Richich told Maloni. “The fact that the staff showed Mr. Snyder disrupting their respect for the process by participating in the process is a sign of indifference to Jewish customs.”
A spokesman for the committee told JTA that Snyder did not appear voluntarily at the committee’s hearing in June and did not allow his lawyer to receive a summons.
