As NFL teams look to trim their 80-man training camp rosters to 53, New York Giants general manager Joe Shawn and personnel department officials monitor the Weaver wire for new faces as the team is depleted by both injuries and talent.
“I think we’re open to improving our team in any way we can,” head coach Brian Daboll said when asked if trades could be in the Giants’ near future.
“We’re looking to improve as much as we can. Joe and his staff, we’ve been meeting all morning about different things, making good contact, talking to the coaches and seeing different players. To evaluate. I think Joe is open for business.”
That’s not surprising, given that the Giants have plenty of talent at a position they could probably get something in return without, according to the NFLPA’s Public Cap Report. To go through the removal process.

There is already a report that the Giants have received trade offers for receiver Darius Slayton, who is believed to be moving forward in the team’s plans. Moving on from Slayton, who is in the final year of his rookie deal, would save the team $2.5 million in cap space, which could be used to add two minimum salary cap benefits.
“I think where we’re at is trying to find the best football players we can to keep on our roster,” Daboll said of the challenges in putting the roster together.
“Can we be heavy in one position and light in another? Of course, I think our goal right now is to find players that fit the mold that we want to bring here, and if it’s a certain size in one position and a little less in one position, I think that’s okay. Do we have the right numbers? The right numbers.” I’m not sure if there are numbers, but I’d say the best thing we can do is try to find as many good footballers as we can. We want them in terms of intelligence, integrity and strength.

Daball said kicker Graham Gano (concussion) is on the right side, so he decided to release Ryan Santoso, who kicked for the team in the preseason finale against the Jets. … Backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor woke up with “soreness,” according to Daboll, who missed the preseason with a back injury. Still, the coach doesn’t seem concerned about Taylor’s availability for the Week 1 opener in two weeks.
