The Australian aboriginal plans to bring representation to NYFW as an indigenous designer
Australian Aboriginal fashion designer Bobbie Lockyer is set to make her mark as an Indigenous fashion designer at New York Fashion Week (NYFW) in September 2022. The First Nations fashion designer and 2021 Nydoc Artist of the Year are invited to NYFW only. To showcase her high-end fashion label recognized at Australian Fashion Week and Darwin Country Toucher. Lockyer has launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise money for the fees needed to showcase her skills at NYFW. Also, for brands interested in getting exclusive content or partnerships from Lockyer at NYFW, she created a GoFundMe account to allow sponsorships.
As a proud Ngarluma, Kariyarra, Nyulnyul & Yawuru woman born and based in Port Hedland, Lockyer is determined to enter the fashion and creative arts space with mind-blowing creations. What’s more, she prides herself on being a colorful designer, so she has plenty up her sleeve to add a splash of color to the grand event. Being her first time out of Australia, she has some plans in place to put on a great show.
Lockyer is primarily known as a queer Aboriginal artist and feminist pink-haired mermaid queen who is determined to transform the art scene. She is an official photographer for Nikon Australia and a single mother to four boys, raising their great potential. Despite her traumatic background, she never used her experience as an excuse to do great things with her talents. She was bullied as a child and was called derogatory names such as “too fat for fashion”, “dead mouse” and “abo”. She was told that she would never succeed as an artist because she was too fat, and as a native, she was of no use to the art scene.
After leaving a highly abusive marriage that had a negative impact on her mental health 5 years ago, she began to hone her skills, building a solid structure and foundation for her photography brand and fashion label called “Gantariri (pronounced gun-tar-di)” which means both “queen bee” and “grandmother”. In Ngaluma language. Ganthari is a tribute to her native ancestor, the original queen bee. Interestingly, within a year of launching her label, she was featured in Australian Fashion Week and Darwin Country Couture. These special victories and more are what she strives to achieve as she continues to shine on her saws. She is driven by her desire to provide fashionable clothes for women of all sizes, and her fashion label is suitable for all genders and body sizes.
“Being part of the fashion industry, not just my label, is a representation for us indigenous people. It’s very important to me and important to our culture because growing up I felt like I couldn’t wear fashion. I wasn’t skinny or white enough to participate in fashion, so it’s important to me to help enable that for someone else,” said Bobby Lockyer.
