As Milwaukee’s tech industry continues to expand, organizations like the MKE Tech Hub Coalition are helping to sustain that growth. The Tech Hub works to attract talent to the tech industry, build a diverse pipeline and connect with the Milwaukee community.
Joined by Jasmin Treske, Manager of Tech Programs and Community Outreach. Lake effect To highlight the work the coalition is doing and their goals for Milwaukee’s tech future. The mission of the MKE Tech Hub Alliance is to double down on the inclusion of technology in the Milwaukee region.
MKE Tech Hub works with startups and founders, K-12 students and individuals looking to develop their technology skills. MKE Tech Hub recently hosted a summer long program called “FUSE” where high school students had the opportunity to participate in a summer boot camp designed to build technology skills. Students studied technology modules and then learned about career readiness in the industry in partnership with The Commons.
“The last three weeks of that program were devoted to industry challenges, where our corporate members were given an industry challenge to solve and used everything they learned in the program to solve that challenge,” says Treske.
The MKE Tech Hub Coalition focuses on engaging and empowering the underrepresented in the technology field.
“These kids, the experts in the field came up with something that they don’t come up with now. “There’s so much more to do, I think it’s important to have exposure, and to see people who look like them in these places so they feel like it’s really attainable,” Treske says.
Over 50% of those offered at MKE Tech Hub come from a historically underrepresented demographic. Treske believes diverse voices and backgrounds are critical when collaborating and leveraging innovation in technology.
“In all fairness, technology has historically been very white male-led, and you know, other firms are coming to Milwaukee … The big thing now is hiring diverse talent,” Treske said. “And if you don’t have that in the technology industry, you’re leaving different experiences, ideas and leadership on the table.”
If you want to get involved with the MKE Tech Hub Coalition, they have declared October 3-7 as this year’s “Milwaukee Tech Week.” They have openings to host sessions, become sponsors, or attend Tech Week at mketech.org/milwaukee-tech-week.
