ALTON – Alton High School will celebrate Black History Month with a fashion event titled “A Taste of Soul in Hair and Fashion” on Monday, Feb. 27 in the high school auditorium at 6 p.m.
The event was the brainchild of Paula Covington, secretary of the Alton Achievement Academy and Office of Aging, who wanted to use Taste of Soul as an annual event to showcase aspects of black people and culture.
“We always say one thing about Rosa Parks and Martin Luther, let’s go another way to inspire who we are and what we do and how we think and see,” Covington said.
The fashion show showcases different styles of black hair and fashion at various times in black history, from Africa to the late 2000s. Covington said there will be 16 models made up of community volunteers, Alton High School students and current students.
Includes soul food by Ray’s Wings and Belleville Stuff. The meal includes yams, greens, dressing, mac and cheese and wings. Tickets are available at the second level welcome desk or by calling 618-474-2700. It is $20 for ages 7 and up and $10 for ages 6 and under.
“It’s open to the public to come and travel with us through our culture in hair and fashion,” Covington said.
