The European Commission has fined BMW and Volkswagen € 875 million for breaching EU antitrust rules by collaborating to prevent the deployment of net emissions technology.
Daimler, which was also part of the cartel, escaped a fine because the German vehicle manufacturer revealed the group’s existence, the commission reported on Thursday.
All companies, including Audi and Porsche, which are part of the Volkswagen group, acknowledged their involvement in the cartel and agreed to resolve the case, the EU executive body said.
“The five carmakers Daimler, BMW, Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche possessed the technology to reduce harmful emissions beyond what was legally required by EU emissions standards,” said Margrethe Vestager, EU Executive Vice President in charge of competition policy.
“So today’s decision is about legitimate technical cooperation that went wrong,” he said. “And we do not tolerate it when companies place. It is illegal under EU antitrust rules. “
