The first regular season in Washington wasn’t perfect for Carson Wentz. The error-prone Wentz threw two interceptions. Wide receiver Curtis Samuel lost a fumble.
Washington trailed the Jacksonville Jaguars 14-3 at halftime. Jacksonville then scored nine unanswered points in the third quarter to set up the final score.
Down 22-14 after a James Robinson touchdown with less than 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter, Wentz and his Chiefs worked their magic. That included Wentz’s two longest touchdown drives of 78 yards and 90 yards to lead Washington. The dude was absolutely on fire to shut things down for Washington. That included Wentz hitting rookie wide receiver Jahan Dotson for the game-winning touchdown in a 28-22 victory.
All told, Wentz completed 8-of-12 passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns to finish the game. Just amazing.

As mentioned above, Wentz threw two interceptions in his first start with the Chiefs. In the second half, Jacksonville took control of the game and scored 10 points.
Unlike what we’ve seen over the past two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts, Wentz has been able to overcome these mistakes rather than watch things go downhill.
Following the win, Commanders head coach Ron Rivera said the team has “moxie.” He pointed out that it is not possible to move forward by referring to the three changes. Obviously, some of that was focused on the two interceptions Wentz threw in the second half.
Outside of those two picks, Wentz found a way to get all of his playmakers involved. Running back Antonio Gibson was 7 of 8 targets for 72 yards. Terry McClarin caught a 49-yard touchdown pass. As for Dotson, he had two touchdowns on three catches. In particular, Rivera talked about being a first-round pick during the regular season.
That’s what we saw during the draft process. That’s why we did what we did. We are very fortunate to have such a talented young man.
There were some issues with the defense going forward. That’s especially true when talking about cornerback play. Jaguars wide receivers Christian Kirk and Zay Jones completed 12-of-21 targets for 182 yards. Marvin Jones added four catches or 38 yards on six targets.
This star edge rusher should adjust to some extent if Chase Young returns from injury. Being able to get constant pressure on the quarterback will help the Washington Chiefs secondary moving forward.
Although there is a good feeling in Washington right now, it should be noted that the team is facing a bad Jaguars team on the home court. Not necessarily a sign of things to come.
But with next week’s game against the Detroit Lions, the 2-0 start to the campaign will now be seen as an opportunity. That has to be seen as a good thing after the DC drama is over.
