Devin Singletary is both an “under the radar” mix and an important pending free agent for the Buffalo Bills.
He led the Bills (13-3) in carries, rushing yards, and had five rushing scores. That trails only Josh Allen’s seven quarterback sacks.
Meanwhile, other players on expiring contracts, such as safety Jordan Poyer and linebacker Tremaine Edmonds, have received plenty of attention.
Sure, Singletary sometimes put the ball on the ground, but he played a role, and it wasn’t a small one.
It remains to be seen what will happen with Buffalo’s top running back from the last few years. So far, the future looks very cloudy for the single.
At the end of the season press conference, general manager Brandon Beane praised Single. Then he took up the business side of things. This makes it look like the bills may have a tough time making ends meet.
“It’s improved a lot in a short distance. We know it can turn men off. His hands have improved,” the GM said. “We have to see how this works for us from a business perspective.”
According to Spotrac, the Bills are about $16 million over the projected salary cap in 2023. Many moves will be made by Ben to free up space, but space will be thin no matter what.
The elephant in the room is the extension of quarterback Josh Allen. Per Spotrac, Allen’s cap hit fell from $16.4 million to $39.8 million next year. This further frustrates the team and players fall by the wayside.
Singles is a candidate to be one of those because, like most players, he wants a big contract after his rookie deal. A little guy like Bills doesn’t want it.
However, the player has little hope.
Single entered WROC-TV He wants to go back to Buffalo. Single added that he thinks he has the ability to make “the right amount” of impact in the Bills’ offense.
That may be another factor playing on Single’s mind: life without James Cook.
Plus, Cook himself was drafted in the third round last year. Down the stretch, Cook began running more against the Bills on the field. He is clearly part of the team’s future plans.
Generally, a single can be halfway out the door.
