Now in its fourth year, the annual MTN Awards for Social Change recently honored four non-profit organizations (NPOs) for excellence in monitoring and evaluation (M&E).

One NPO in each of the categories – large, medium and small NPOs – received R300,000, and a bonus award of R100,000 was awarded for the best evidence of advanced M&E practice.
The winners are:
- Large NPO category (gross annual revenue over R15m) – Ndlovu Care Group
- Medium NPO category (gross annual income above R5m but less than R15m) –
- Neighborhood Homes for the Aging (NOAH)
- Small NPO category (gross annual income below R5m) – OneVoice South Africa
- Bonus Category – Homeless Ministries U-turn
A changing M&E landscape
Asghar Bhikko, Investment Lead at E-Cared Investments, has been judging the MTN Awards for Social Change since its inception in 2019. He said he encouraged M&E to be seen as a strategic learning and accountability partner, regardless of size. and the age of the organizations applying for the award.
“I’ve noticed that the process is more competitive,” he says. “Across categories, there were organizations demonstrating how M&E can be used beyond accounting for cost and program delivery. There are further submissions that describe M&E as a practice to support research and to validate and validate theories of change and inform program design.
“Furthermore, many organizations are using technology to collect and report data related to program implementation to inform continuous improvement and evaluation decision-making.”
This year, he was joined by fellow judges Ferial Domingo, Acting Executive Director of Ignatello, and Jessica Williams, M&E Associate at Trialogue.

Increase awareness of the value of M&E
Trialogue MD Nick Rockey said the MTN Awards for Social Change continue to encourage NPOs to elevate their M&E practices and share their learnings with their peers.
“Once again, the MTN Awards for Social Change highlight the importance of good M&E for NPOs aspiring to achieve maximum results,” he said. “The growing awareness of the value of M&E is encouraging for NPOs to drive continuous improvement in their organizations and better serve their stakeholders.”
