In the past few years, a large number of designers have turned to additive manufacturing as a manufacturing method for their original works. At the Chanel fashion show, at the Paris fashion show or at Dolce and Gabbana – the trend of creation in the field of fashion cannot be stopped. Anouk Wipprecht, a fashion technology designer from the Netherlands, knows this better than anyone. She is known for taking creative risks, having previously worked with celebrities such as the Black Eyed Peas, Britney Spears or Fergie. In addition to focusing on artificial intelligence, robotics and mechanics, as well as machine learning, Wipprecht, who uses 3D printing to create her fashion, stole the show with her 3D printed dress creation at a recent event in New York.
The event was the opening of Journey, a theatrical gastronomy event in the city that involves harnessing the five senses for a fine dining adventure. This was opened to the public on January 5. Already a feast for the eyes, the 3D printed costumes took the aesthetic to the next level.
Wipprecht and Shapeways work together on fashion from 3D printing
In the past, the technology designer based in the Netherlands has chosen to produce clothes that resemble robots in collaboration with the company Shapeways. 3D-printed parts are made of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) and polyamide 11 (PA 11). Regarding the technologies employed in the process, selective laser sintering (SLS) was used, as well as the HP Multi Jet Fusion (MJF) process. The reason behind this lies in the characteristics of the following sections. While Wipprecht used SLS in her work with Shapeways to produce more stable parts, MJF found more flexible parts in this case. Wipprecht emphasizes the advantages of TPU when used in MJF 3D printers as follows:Through this process, we were able to integrate the components with technology and electronics to make our plaster casting both flexible and convenient. TPU has the flexibility of rubber, good impact resistance and is strong, so it is perfect for this type of design. He said.
For Journey360’s inaugural event, the designer teamed up with Broadway producer Mark Root and a collection of designers, writers, chefs, artists and performers to create “Restaurant x Immersive Experience x Fashion x Robotics x Projection x Art and more,” as she explained on her Instagram account.
