Sunday’s rubber matchup between the Chicago Cubs and Milwaukee Brewers is just north of the border, with the Cubs taking on the Toronto Blue Jays for a three-game set. However, two players will not be traveling with the team due to Canada’s Covid rules, which require those entering the country to be fully vaccinated. LHP Justin Steele and RHP Adrian Sampson will not travel to Toronto and will face the Cubs in St. Louis starting Sept. 2.
In fact, the lack of travel provides a good opportunity for Justin Steele. He left Friday’s start early, closing in on the rear. Now, he can get a few more days off in Chicago, just helping his back. Steele would have camped had he traveled on Wednesday, so the two extra days off would benefit the Cubs’ 2022 ace.
Sampson will not miss a start because of the trip. Sampson will battle LHP Eric Lauer on Sunday in Milwaukee, so Sampson will be ready for his next start in St. Louis. It will take a toll as the Cubs go for another series win against the Brewers in recent weeks.
All three games against Toronto list the Cubs starter as TBD. However, with Steele set to miss the start, we’ll see Marcus Strowman, Javier Assad and possibly Mark Leiter Jr. as starters. Cubs fans can expect to see Justin Steele along with Drew Smiley and Adrian Sampson in the Cardinals series after the team returns to action on Friday.
