The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and the New England Trail helped land two western Massachusetts towns on CNN’s list of the most under-traveled destinations in the United States. However, Pioneer Valley locals may take issue with the news network’s decision to label western Massachusetts towns as “central Massachusetts.”
Springfield and Northampton are both on CNN’s list of “America’s 22 Most Underrated Destinations.” According to CNN reporters, the two cities have a lot to offer tourists and typically “fly under the travel radar.”
“While western Massachusetts boasts the Berkshires, the eastern tip of the state is anchored by Boston and Cape Cod,” writes CNN. “So what’s in the middle? a lot of.”
According to CNN’s list, Springfield and Northampton are central Massachusetts.
As Massachusetts residents know, Springfield and Northampton are part of Western Massachusetts. Western Massachusetts includes Franklin, Hampshire, Hampden and Berkshire counties.
Regardless, Springfield and Northampton have a lot to offer Massachusetts tourists.
The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield is said to be a “must see” attraction for tourists.

The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame gives visitors a look back at the sport’s 1891 beginnings as a rainy-day YMCA indoor activity to the modern-day phenomenon of numerous basketball leagues around the world. Player and NBA memorabilia, foot size comparisons and a full-court gym are just a few of the attractions at the Basketball Hall of Fame.
CNN also noted that Springfield’s Wonderful World of Dr. Seuss Museum and Sculpture Garden is a great place for families to visit. The city is celebrating Theodore “Dr. Seuss” Geisel’s life spans a year “Seuss-iversary” tribute to Springfield children’s author and illustrator.

Northampton’s thriving LGBTQ community, local restaurants and “mom-and-pop” shops helped land the western Massachusetts town on CNN’s list. The network said the city’s proximity to the New England Trail made it an ideal travel destination for tourists.
Northampton boasts the largest number of distributors in the state and has been heralded as the “Weed Capital of New England.” Here’s MassLive’s early coverage of the 12 dispensaries covering the city of nearly 29,000 people.
Of course, Central Massachusetts also has a lot to offer – including the Worcester Art Museum, the Canal District Wagon Tour and the Hanover Theatre.
