Every year when a new semester rolls around, many Boston College students arrive on campus with newly purchased clothes and accessories, ready to show off their new outfits.
This year was no different, and BC students braved the chilly Northeast weather to combine warmth and protection with today’s online trends in their attire—creating the perfect combination of comfort and style. Here are five big fashion trends to keep an eye on throughout the spring semester.
Headphones and AirPods top
Although beanies are a staple that warms the heads of many college students during the snowy winters, I find that more and more students are trading in their beanies for ear-focused protection. Earmuffs seem to have made a comeback in women’s headwear. They serve as a safe alternative to hair caps, which often provide warmth at the cost of static-inducing irritation.
Similarly, many BC students are back on campus with the latest version of Apple AirPods, a classic style of over-ear headphones that were popular in the late 2000s and early 2010s. Although on the pricier end—starting at $549—the new AirPods Max offer a new level of comfort, functionality, and style, allowing BC students to blast anything from Ice Spice to Bad Browns on their icy commute from Linden Lane. Lower.
Neutrals on crewnecks and cable-knit sweaters
One trend that seems to have survived the new year is the old money aesthetic. In the era of the Gossip Girl revival (rest in peace), classic and understated dressing has become increasingly popular in the country as teenagers and adults try to emulate the style of the Northeast elite.
Lately, students walking through campus can be found wearing Nike hoodies and cable knit sweaters. Worn in cool tones like pale grey, navy blue and beige, this essential look is topped off with a turtleneck or button-down collar for an extra touch of preppy style.
skin and hair
Everywhere you go lately, you can’t escape leather—faux or real. From the classic lace-up Dr. Martens to the brown leather trench coat, whether you know it or not, leather has made its way into everyone’s wardrobe.
Likewise, many students’ winter coats cover fur, regardless of brand. Canada Goose, Zara, or Macy’s, long black parkas with furry hoods have become staples on campus.
Flared jeans and leggings
70’s trends As they continue to grow in 2023, burnt pants spread across the country. Although mom and boyfriend jeans are alive and well in the world of college fashion, flared pants add an even vintage twist. The most basic outfit, and I’m here.
Legwears & Tights
In 2023, the rebirth of pedestrian hotness is gaining momentum, and after being considered a shameful relic of our parents’ adolescence, it has come back in modern fashion as teenagers and young creatives admire the creators. On the so-called ‘ballet-core’.
Ballet-core, a style that evokes the calm and relaxed nature of ballerinas’ usual practice wear, introduced both tights and leg warmers into women’s everyday wear. Often combined with a mini skirt, the combination of legwarmers and tights has entered the closet of both ballet core fans and those who want to decorate in their own unique way. It is a trend to be seen in the coming months.
