This closet emergency could have sent someone straight to the principal.
“Abbott Elementary” star Sheryl Lee Ralph wowed on the red carpet at the 2022 Emmy Awards on Monday in a sleek, strapless black velvet gown with an orange overlay — but almost suffered a serious fashion faux pas.
Ralph revealed that she accidentally tripped on the red carpet. “A designer gave my partner and I the same design for the same gown,” the sitcom star told The Associated Press.
It wasn’t until she was on set that her co-star Lisa Ann Walters showed Ralph her outfit plan – an off-the-shoulder green gown with ruffled sleeves and a gold belt, which she wore until the September, 12 awards show.
“Until five days ago I had no gown, nothing,” Ralph said. “Brandon Blackwood heard about my problem through Roberto Statistic in New York.”
Ralph Blackwood, 65, said he “went up” and “was in Japan and started making gowns on the Pacific flight.”
The designer – who creates handbags and small accessories and recently introduced shoes with a pair of custom shoes – made a “first dress” for the event, according to Instagram.
Fans called the combination “legendary” and commented, “She looks gorgeous as always.”
As stylist Roberto Johnson wrote on his Instagram stories, “I can say this one day after my 15th anniversary of immigrating to America. [sic] I’ve created an Emmy-winning style!”
Ralph, who plays longtime teacher Mrs. Barbara Howard on the ABC show and wowed as she accepted her award in song, accessorized her look with a Brandon Blackwood mini bag, diamond choker and long braid covered in crystals.
Ralph was praised for her rousing acceptance speech after taking home the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series.
“For anyone who dreams and thinks it’s not your dream, it couldn’t be true, I’m here to believe what it feels like,” she told the audience.
