The United States’ “pursuit of supremacy” in the world’s oceans and NATO expansion are the main threats to Russia’s national maritime security, according to the new Russian naval doctrine adopted on Sunday.
Russian President Vladimir Putin signed an executive order approving the Naval Doctrine of the Russian Federation and Russian Naval Regulations ahead of the main naval parade, Xinhua news agency reported.
The 55-page doctrine says the main challenges and threats to Russia’s national security and sustainable development are “the US’s strategic approach to hegemony in the world’s oceans and its global influence on international processes.”
“The expansion of NATO’s military infrastructure to Russia’s borders” and the “increasing number of NATO exercises in water-related areas” were listed as major threats to Russia’s national security.
According to Putin in his rally speech, the doctrine clearly shows the borders and zones of Russia’s national interests.
According to the TASS report, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Yuri Borisov said that the reform of the maritime doctrine reflects the changes in the geopolitical and military strategic situation in the world.
