Roanoke County to host CTE meetings for business community.

Roanoke County Public Schools will hold two meetings for the business community to discuss the proposed new Roanoke County Public Schools CTE Center at 6521 Peters Creek Road for students’ career and technical education courses and trade training needs. This new CTE center will replace the existing CTE facility at the Burton Center for Arts and Technology (BCAT).

The public is invited to attend.

North County

Virginia Humanities has announced 19 fellowships

Virginia Humanities, Virginia’s state humanities council, has announced nineteen new fellowships.

K-12 Teacher Association The opportunity focuses on a broad humanities curriculum for educators to “design innovative learning experiences that are easily accessible to both classroom and remote use by educators in Virginia.

Those listed include teachers from the western part of the state.

Kathryn Breeze – Elementary Lead Technology Resource Teacher in Montgomery County

Lorraine Dresch – high school history teacher in Waynesboro

Tammy Layne – High School Library Media Specialist in Bath County

Lewis Longnecker – Middle School Teacher in Cumberland County

Sarah Medukas – Assistant Principal and Gifted Coordinator in Scott County

The Public Humanities Alliance helps writers, independent scholars, community historians, and college and university faculty “share meaningful research, stories, and cultural expressions that are relevant to Virginia’s diverse communities and connect audiences to broader regional, national, and international contexts.”

That list includes the following

The dean of the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine has been named to the National Diversity Team

The Association of American Medical Colleges recently named Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine Dean Lee Lerman a Dean’s Insight Circle for Diversity Leadership. The 11-member group announces the development of an accountability framework to guide the nation’s medical school leaders in their continued efforts to diversify their education.

The nonprofit Association of American Medical Colleges represents 171 accredited US and Canadian medical schools and is committed to transforming health through medical education, health care, medical research and community collaboration. The work of Dean’s Insight Circle contributes to the system change efforts it supports and the National Medical Association’s Action Collaborative for Black Men in Medicine.

Sweet named chairman of the medical department

John Sweet, MD, has been elected to serve as chairman of the Carilion Clinic Department of Medicine and the Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine, effective August 1, 2022.

Sweet has served as interim chairman of the Department of Medicine since December 2021, as he did in 2015-2016.

Sweet graduated from the University of Virginia, and later earned a medical degree from the University of Virginia School of Medicine. He served his residency and subsequent chief residency in internal medicine at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Medical Center in Ohio while on active duty. Prior to joining Carilion Clinic, he served for many years as Director of the Department of Internal Medicine at Wright State University Bohnhoft School of Medicine and the Uniformed Services University F. Edward Herbert School of Medicine.
