After recently being listed between Qatar and New Zealand, Riverhead is bracing for a flood of tourists. Forbes Magazine’s annual Best Travel Destinations in 2023 collection of 50 international destinations.
The century-old bi-quarterly trade publication offers readers suggested travel hotspots for long trips, hidden gems on the typical itinerary, and weekend getaway ideas.
“Visit the Long Island Aquarium, home to one of the world’s largest coral reefs, or stop at the Jamesport Brewery, where everything from the hops to the barley to the wheat is made in-house at the Jamesport Brewery.” Forbes Writers pointed out. “Mid-September through October is peak apple picking season, when you can pick your own at several local orchards. And no trip to Riverhead is complete without seeing the famous ‘Big Duck,’ a 20-foot-tall duck-shaped sculpture.”
It was an unexpected announcement for a community in the shadow of the Hamptons, known internationally as a summer destination for the rich, famous and those who want to rub elbows with them.
The news comes as Riverhead ramps up efforts to revitalize its downtown, securing $10 million in New York State funding to advance its efforts.
Riverhead Town Supervisor Yvette Aguiar was pleased to hear her community was rated so highly. Forbes.
“Riverhead is unequivocally on the map,” she said.
