Rice is a staple in many Asian cuisines, including mouth-watering dishes like Japanese sushi, Chinese fried rice and Korean bibimbap. Nothing beats a bowl of rice for a hearty meal! If you haven’t noticed already, I’m a big fan of rice. It’s a popular ingredient in skin care too, as rice has long been used in beauty rituals in Asia. Rice is known to help you achieve clear and smooth skin, so I decided to use this ingredient to kick-start my summer glow.
Admittedly, I’m quite late to the game as I’ve never used rice-formulated skin care products until now. For a month, I trialed South Korean beauty brand Goodal’s Vegan Rice Milk Moisturizing Toner and Vegan Rice Milk Moisturizing Cream in my evening skin care routine to see if I can harness the power of rice to achieve beautiful and healthy skin. Both products feature rice milk made of rice from Jeju Island. These hypoallergenic formulas are suitable for sensitive skin.
Vegan Rice Milk Moisturizing Toner
What it is: The Vegan Rice Milk Moisturizing Toner is a low pH toner containing Vegan Rice Milk ™ to retain moisture and aqua ceramide to deliver intense moisture to skin. It effectively absorbs into skin and delivers soothing properties.
My experience: After cleansing my face, I used this toner to balance my skin’s pH levels. Most toners have a watery consistency, so when I squirted a dollop of this rice milk-infused toner into my hands, I was surprised by its gel-like texture. The toner felt soothing, moisturizing and intensely nourishing on my face, but my skin felt a little sticky afterwards. I prefer to use a toner in a watery and lightweight texture post-cleansing, so after my first try of Goodal’s toner, I only used a small drop each time – a little goes a long way. Within a month, my skin appeared clearer and more rejuvenated.
Vegan Rice Milk Moisturizing Cream
What it is: The Vegan Rice Milk Moisturizing Cream is a gentle cream containing Vegan Rice Milk ™ to retain moisture and aqua ceramide to strengthen the skin barrier by forming a moisture layer over skin for up to 24 hours.
My experience: At the last step of my skin care routine, I locked in moisture with this moisturizing cream. The white formula has a thick viscosity like most creams. It spread smoothly over my face, but like the toner, the cream felt heavy on my skin. It left a slightly sticky finish that I could feel when I laid my head on a pillow. As nourishing and moisturizing as the cream is, I believe that its thickness caused a few whiteheads on my face. As a result, I used a small amount of cream each time to minimize breakouts. Over time, my skin grew accustomed to the cream and looked moisturized, plump and healthy. I also used this moisturizer on my eczema-prone hands that needed nourishment, and the cream fared better on my hands than on my face!
Final Thoughts
Both the Vegan Rice Milk Moisturizing Toner and Vegan Rice Milk Moisturizing Cream are intensely nourishing and moisturizing. They form a noticeable moisturizing layer over skin to seal in moisture, but the thick texture of the formulas may not be for everyone. I recommend using them if you have dry skin or you live in a dry and cold environment. For other skin types, if you plan to use this toner and cream, I suggest swapping them into your skin care routine when you transition into winter months.
Despite the products’ thick viscosity, I grew to appreciate the plump and clear skin I got from using the duo. On top of that, I like Goodal’s simple and sustainable product packaging made from 30% recycled plastic and eco-friendly sugar cane paper. I enjoyed my one-month trial of the Vegan Rice Milk Moisturizing Toner and Vegan Rice Milk Moisturizing Cream, but I’ll probably wait till winter to use them again!
