Real Real’s New Unexpected Memoir Celebrates ‘The Joy of Making’ – WWD

Real Madrid’s design tail hasn’t lost its edge, as evidenced by this week’s recent fallout.

Like the previous launches, the new edition, ReCollection 04 titled “The Joy of Making and Creating” is all designed and made in-house, numbering 90 pieces per style (up from 83 for the previous collection). The brand-agnostic Upcycle collection includes apparel ranging from XS to XXXL, ranging from $140 to $560, and three accessories. It will be available online and at the Real Real Soho store from Tuesday.

Noël Skacca, head of womenswear at Real Real, says the collection is about the addition of demi-couture and the importance of handcrafting techniques within a sustainable collection.

“We were challenging ourselves to work with pieces that were very damaged,” she told WWD. The results include trendy transitional pieces like crop tops and two-tone pants, many of which are reworked from traditional menswear staples within weeks. She called it “the antidote to fast fashion” considering the time and craftsmanship used to transform clothes.

Sciacca said customers want to use the “zoom in” feature online to get a feel for detail improvements in the collection. The collection features kitschy graphic patchwork, grunge safety pin details, Victorian era embroidery and lacing techniques all meant to honor distressed areas.

When asked if there will be a ReCollection fashion show in any major cities anytime soon, Sciacca said no without question. “We don’t have plans for that yet, but we certainly don’t count anything out. Maybe we put some of our efforts forward by partnering with brands, but we’re constantly challenging ourselves with what we can do in the cycling world.

Although the project boasts cycling chops, the collection of 90 recycled items pales in comparison to the roughly 10,000 new items added to RealReel every day.

“These are inanimate objects,” Sciacca reiterated. “These aren’t just the hemlines that need to be folded or the buttons unbuttoned. We can’t list ‘if’, and if not, we could end up in landfills.” [The collection] It’s tiny compared to 10,000, but when you consider that it’s something that would otherwise die, now you have a chance at a new life.

She called RealReal’s recycling efforts a broad brush for systems change, and James Rogers, director of sustainability at RealReal, agreed.

“Our aim was to show how unnecessary it is. [waste] Cycling is about testing and proving strength,” he said. “This indoor collection is the largest we’ve ever done, almost double the size of ReCollection 01. We can proudly say that this ReCollection has had a very positive impact on moving items out of landfills and into circulation.
