There are celebrities who have turned oversharing into a dubious but rewarding art form. And then there’s Rachel Bilson, known for her role in “The OC.” And on “Hart of Dixie,” she’s smart, pretty, and happy-go-lucky, but if you didn’t know any better, you’d think Bilson was the opposite of desirable.
Here’s the thing: All you have to do is listen to the new podcast, Broad Thoughts., Team up with her smart friend Olivia Allen to quickly learn that nothing is off limits with Bilson. Her guests, including Kristen Bell, Mandy Moore and Aubrey Plaza, talk about devastating divorces, difficult pregnancies and even more devastating style choices.
“As far as wanting to create an open, transparent space primarily for women, I felt the timing was perfect,” says Bilson. “Everything just fell into place and felt right.
I’ve learned that it’s okay to talk about tampon strings. Or the birth experience was traumatic. And we get into great detail in some of our topic sections. They are very raw, but I also feel, why not? Why can’t we talk about this?
Now that she’s slowly emerging from the Covid-related lockdowns, Bilson is finding her travel footing. But what are the comforts you always carry? This is what she always carries in her handbag when she travels.

When you travel, Billson needs a bag that can deliver – and the bag is called the Black Hole. It has two removable shoulder pads that can be used as a backpack and a 40-liter capacity. “I’m a purse hunter—I have so many purses,” she says. “I keep buying backpacks, but the one that never fails is the Patagonia Black Hole. I’m telling you, this is the best carry-on I’ve had in years.”
Patagonia Black Hole comes in four sizes – 40 liters, 55 liters, 70 liters and 100 liters – and has different colors to match every style. It’s made from super-durable fabric that can withstand all travel adventures, and padded, removable shoulder straps are great for easy portability.

Bilson leaves nothing to be desired when dealing with germs. “I’m a crazy over-planner. So even pre-pandemic I was using Clorox wipes, Purell wipes, everything, to wipe down the whole area.
This value pack is perfect, as it comes with both tin wipes and a seal pack – the latter great for travelling. Pop one of the resealable packs into your carry-on bag and you’ll have enough disinfectant power for your flight and upon arrival at your hotel.

When she got her daughter an Apple iPad, she wasn’t fooling herself. “I’m always uploading stuff to my iPad and binge shows because it’s the only time you have uninterrupted time—and it’s great,” says Bilson. “When I’m on a plane, I do a little bit of reality.” Bachelor in Paradise being there [as] One of my favorites.”
The fifth-generation Apple iPad Air has all-day battery life and a clear 10.9-inch Liquid Retina display, making it a great option for airplane travel. Bilson likes to “wire” when she brings her headphones on board. “Bluetooth doesn’t work – I’m anti-Bluetooth,” she says, opting for a lightweight over-ear model with a microphone. Plus, they’re battery-free, so there’s no need to charge them on the go. And when it comes to playing in-flight entertainment with wired headphones, you don’t need a Bluetooth adapter to get the audio directly to your headphones. You can just log in and listen.

For Bilson, comfort comes before anything else. And while others may be kicking their heels overboard, Bilson is perfectly happy in her strappy shoes. “I’m too old. I love a proper book – if I want to read a book, I’m secretly 80 years old, says Bilson. I have my cozy socks and slippers in my handbag. If you’re going high-end, I love Jenny Kane shoes. They are very comfortable.”
Bilson’s favorite Jenny Kane Moroccan slippers are a shearling-lined shoe with a super-comfortable exterior. Reviewers say they’re so soft and comfortable you won’t want to take them off.

Bilson is a big fan of keeping her feet on the cozy side with cute socks, along with go-to slippers. “My comfy socks are from Target—I like to mix and match,” she says. “But I’m a big advocate of soft feet.” This pack of cozy socks comes complete with two pairs. They’re low-cut, so they’ll fit most shoes, and they’re lightweight so your feet don’t overheat.

Bilson is a big believer in the healing power of stretchy belts and forgiving stretchy fabric. “The sweat suit is my uniform. Aviator Nation are so soft, comfortable, dreamy, she says. Also, never fly with a jumper because you can’t scratch it, and like I said, I’m 80, so I clean about 10 times in flight. I’m always the one getting up to use the bathroom.
This sweatshirt from Aviator Nation is a great option for travelers. It has a nice feel to it after going through a tough disassembly process. Reviewers rave about the design and feel of this sweatshirt. You’re sure to get compliments as you stroll through the airport.

Like the professional traveler she is, Bilson makes sure Noggin has a place to rest. “Of course I bring a real pillow, but I put two pillowcases on it because once I get there I have to take out the dirty pillowcase that was on the plane,” she says. This pillow from Coop Home Goods is customizable to your needs so you can get the right support for a good night’s sleep on any flight.

Bilson is super-retro when it comes to her airy aesthetic. The lip smacker lover loves a different flavor that is hard to find. “I always carry with me … Dr. Pepper lip balm,” she says, “because it’s moisturizing, but it’s a little pigmented. So if you feel like you need a little something, this is always in my bag.”
As we mentioned, Dr. Pepper flavor is hard to come by – and if you can find it, you’ll have to pay upwards of $30 for a stick. Alternatively, try another soda-themed lip smacker to find one you like.
$112 in cash origin
Musk’s duties may come and go, but Bilson is a constant change. She says I will never fly without a mask for the rest of my life. I like heavy duty masks, but I also like Kaze – they make comfortable KN95 masks. Kaze suits me best and my son even better,” she says.
