Despite some major struggles at the St. Jude Championship last week, Patrick Cantley entered the BMW Championship in the top-10 of the FedEx rankings and has a chance to take home the title next week.

Things didn’t go well for Cantley after he hit two bogeys in three holes midway through Sunday’s 4th round. He had to do something special to defend his BMW championship and move up the ranks.

That’s exactly what Cantley did, hitting three birdies in the final eight holes to beat Scott Stallings by one shot. The highlight of the round was this approach on 17, which took a bit of luck at the Wilmington Country Club in Delaware.

Patrick Cantley ends up chipping in for birdie to take a one-shot lead over Stallings heading to 18 before paring for the impressive win.

With the win, Cantley moves to No. 2 overall in the FedEx Cup Playoffs heading into next week’s season finale at East Lake Golf Course in Atlanta.

Cantley’s six-under 65 in Round 3 set the stage for this one. He looked confident following that performance on Saturday, hitting bogey on 17 to end the round.

“The greens are a little beat up and maybe not a good stroke, so after the round I’ll take care of that, practice a little bit,” Patrick Cantley said. “It’s very different from me, and things like this happen.”

As mentioned above, the final tournament of the PGA season begins on Thursday, with several golfers competing in the race to take home the championship.

As a result of the win, Cantley heads into the event second behind Scotty Scheffler (who finished third in the BMW Championship). Will Zalatoris is third after withdrawing from this week’s race due to a back injury. Xander Schauffele and Sam Burns rounded out the top five.

It’s been a great season for Cantley with 11 top-10 finishes so far, including victories at the BMW Championship and the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Will it continue this next week at East Lake?
