The first Saturday in May is Free Comic Book Day across the country. It’s a chance for comic book fans to get free copies of the latest from DC, Marvel, or some other popular publisher.
Hundreds of people spread out around Paradox Comic-N-Cards. Many are here for the free jokes, but to celebrate the day, owner Richard Earley pulled out all the stops.
“We really wanted to make it unique and do something that fans have never seen before,” Early said. “So we went out and got famous comic creator Chris Claremont.”
Chris is a big name in the comic book world, known for his work on the X-men and Fantastic Four. And this big name brought many people.
“I actually drove all the way from Brainerd, Minnesota to see Chris Claremont,” explained a fan named Ray. “I’ve been a fan of X-Men comics for a long time, and I’ll probably never get this opportunity again, so I couldn’t pass it up.”
“The way I think about it, it’s just the day of the year when you wake up and think you’re going to look good,” Braden, another fan, explained.
“Kind of Christmas for nerds every year,” he previously said.
While it’s fun for those just getting into reading, they may not be interested in diving into paperback novels yet.
“This old form of entertainment is mainly being introduced to children and new readers,” said John, another fan waiting to see Chris. I mean, why not?”
So we have Comic Book Legends and Free Comic Books, but that’s not all. Paradox is using the day to celebrate thirty years in business. It’s a proud moment for Early.
“I’ve been really lucky to live this life and to be trusted by so many people and to have so many great people around me,” he previously said. “The store wouldn’t have happened without generations of employees. And I don’t know what I did to earn their loyalty again and again, but it was amazing.”
