Shell Lake, Wis. – Northwood Technical College held a ribbon cutting and open house for its new Health Education Center (HEC) in Shell Lake, WI on Wednesday, August 17th. The building previously housed Northwood Tech’s business offices. It was modified to create Shell Lake area and HCC. The inaugural audience was given a tour of the innovative facility with displays replicated in state-of-the-art labs, including hi-fidelity mannequins to simulate an occupational health environment. Attendees were also shown an anatomy table to demonstrate how students would actually dissect and study the human body while living in the area.
“Teachers control the mannequin from behind a one-way window, which provides unique situations for students to react to situations they may not see during their clinical experience, such as childbirth. “Manikins range from neonatal to geriatrics, offering a wide range of possible scenarios,” said Marie Jo Ulrich, Dean, Health Sciences.
The open forum gave members of the community a unique look at how the field of health and science is rapidly changing and advancing. For institutions like Northwood Tech, that means keeping up with the health care system and the latest practices for incoming students. When students graduate and move to Northwest Wisconsin, students gain quality education and training through collaborative, virtual learning, virtual and telehealth experiences, evidence-based learning, and applied health care-based skills. to the workforce.
“The Health Education Center is an excellent learning space that allows students across the region to achieve their goals. The project was a great opportunity to return the former administration building to a space that directly serves our students and community,” explained College President Dr. John Will.
Using Shell Lake as a central location allows the college to effectively save costs on purchasing and maintaining simulation equipment and technology at all four campuses. The central location between all four campuses creates a better schedule for students and staff to use HEC and maximize learning opportunities with fewer cancellations or schedule disruptions.
Using the simulations reduces the need for time spent in clinical and field work outside of the classroom or laboratory. There is a strong focus on learning the skills of students in a safe environment, which builds skills and confidence. Not only does this mean Northwood Tech students compete with students from other colleges for clinical placements and fieldwork hours, but some hospitals and clinics have reasons that limit their ability to accept Northwood Tech students for clinical or fieldwork, including COVID-19, limited manpower, and productivity requirements. This prevents students in health care programs from meeting required program qualifications. By pushing aside these barriers, HEC helps provide students with the hands-on training needed to keep up with today’s rigorous healthcare environments, although it does not completely replace students learning and demonstrating the necessary competencies.
